TMIT Patient Safety Documentaries

TMIT is driving production of multimedia development of stories to improve patient safety in hospitals. Certain broadcast programs will be shown globally, and then will be made available to hospital leadership, front-line performance teams, and consumers. Stories will include those told by consumers, front-line caregivers, clinical and non-clinical leaders of hospitals, and international subject matter experts. The series of "arc to action" stories will be told to inspire both community and hospital leaders to act locally.

Winning the War on Healthcare Harm Series

This documentary is the third in our multi-program series of at least 5 inspirational films highlighting great role models of leadership, practices, and technologies that can save lives, save money, and bring value to communities as nations deal with the healthcare crisis of cost and harm.  

Dr. Charles Denham and movie actor Dennis Quaid host this movie. The story arc of Healing Moments will use the same award winning formula of the prior two films. It opens with the magnitude of systems failures in healthcare and foreshadows the similarity of performance challenges in aviation, car racing, and high risk military operations with action packed sequences. It appeals to the heart with real patient stories that establish the crisis of harm and waste. It captures the precision ballet of an aircraft carrier deck, NASCAR pit crew, and operating room team that are nearly identical?and that leadership is the secret. It closes with a call to action for patients to get engaged in their care, for hospital leaders to learn from great leaders in other industries, and for all to recognize that we must take care of our workforce in order to create healing moments along every patient's trajectory every day.

There are two target audiences for the series. The target audience for the broadcasts is consumers with the objective to inspire the audience to act in their own communities, at their own hospitals, and take to take an active role in their care. Each documentary is designed to stand alone, however they build on each other by exploring prior stories complimented by new stories and experts that are added with each program. The secondary target audience is hospital leaders – after the broadcast of this film, it will be used for continuing education and performance improvement around the world through additional learning modules developed by TMIT. This extraordinarily successful approach used with the first two films has had high impact results in saving lives and money across the globe.

The first two documentaries aired on the Discovery Channel in 2010 and 2012 respectively.

The details regarding Healing Moments are as follows:

    What:

  • A made-for-TV documentary, 53 minutes long and the working title is Healing Moments: Loved Ones Caring for Loved Ones is in the production stage. Healing Moments is being produced by TMIT. The film is fully financially underwritten by TMIT. The prior two films have been entirely funded by TMIT with some participation sponsors acknowledged in the credits.
  • A main theme of this film and the prior two documentaries is that "great care and safe care exist at the intersection of leadership, practices, and technologies". Engaged leaders, practices that deliver predictable outcomes, and adoption of technologies that support leadership driven practices are illustrated in each documentary. Video from multiple great hospitals around the globe is showcased. In this documentary, a patient will be followed through the Cleveland Clinic showcasing the opportunity for patients and families to be partners in their care to reduce risk and optimize healing.
  • As in our prior film Surfing the Tsunami, military leaders from high performance teams such as the Blue Angels, those who lead the US Navy Strike Force and aircraft carrier operations, and auto racing leaders will be interviewed on site. Special time lapse and trailing image techniques will be used to compare precision flying, aircraft carrier deck operations; aircraft and racing car point-of-view sequences, NASCAR pit crew processes, operating room processes, and Emergency Department work flow.
  • In Healing Moments, one patient story arc is followed through a serious health problem illustrating hazard zones and potential healing moments along his trajectory of care. He is followed through diagnosis of a cancer, surgery, and recuperation phases illustrating opportunities for error, harm, and the patient role in reducing risk. Six supporting patient stories will illustrate the reality of medical harm and waste due to failure of support systems that lead to error. They reinforce the message of the opportunity for improvement. The resolution and inspirational second two thirds of the film showcases great leaders from the Blue Angels and aircraft carrier and Strike Force leaders mentioned below, manufacturing role models and other industries and how healthcare leaders can adopt and apply these same principles to reduce risk and optimize performance.
  • Topics include achieving patient-centered care, with specific focus on what healthcare consumers, patients, and their families can do to improve their own care. Using their own healthcare information management and assisting their caregivers in sharing vital facts, they can avoid the porous safety systems that exist today. Stories regarding patient harm from poor communication of test results, incomplete pain management, and potential benefits of optimal back care will be addressed. The frameworks of overuse, underuse, and misuse of care will be addressed with interviews of leaders of the Choosing Wisely™ program, Image Gently™ and Image Wisely™ programs, and leaders adopting The 5 Rights of Pain Care™ and The 5 Rights of Back Care™.
  • After broadcast network airing, a commercial-free DVD will be produced and distributed for free to all U.S. hospitals by TMIT, and will be sent to the chairmen of hospital governance boards, their CEOs, quality leaders, and nursing leaders. The governance board content will be offered at www.safetyleaders.org through its CareBoards® program. It will be available on Apple iTunes University, as well. A second hour of content composed of digital short stories and concept messages, will be added to the DVD as a toolbox of assets to help hospitals in performance improvement, and will be made available in streaming versions over the internet. A version for consumers will be prepared as well to help them deal with the healthcare system and will be available through the CareMoms™ program hosted at www.safetyleaders.org.

    Who:
  • There are 30 preventable healthcare deaths per hour in U.S. hospitals – this is the same as 20 Boeing 747 airliners going down per week. This coupled to skyrocketing costs that are breaking our nation?s back; we believe everyone should see the film. However we have targeted two specific audiences - first consumers with the broadcast version and the second audience is healthcare leaders who will use copies of the film and additional learning materials as learning vehicles.
  • The consumer target audience is CFOs – the "Chief Family Officers" in our communities who make the healthcare decisions for the family. Traditionally, women who are the soccer moms and grandmothers have made more than 70 percent of the healthcare decisions in America. One in four citizens is caring for someone else, and 80 percent of the caregivers have been women. This is changing, however, as men are becoming much more active in the decision making. Rising healthcare costs, high deductible healthcare plans, and the movement from defined benefits to defined contributions insurance have pulled men into the action. Healthcare costs have become the single biggest reason for bankruptcy – this is a threat to the security of the family. Consumer directed healthcare is a reality of the future. Men are picking up the baton.
  • The second target audience hospital leadership audience members are governance board members, administrative leaders, and clinical leaders dealing with today's challenges of investing in patient safety in the face of shrinking resources. They have used the film for governance board retreats and teaching sessions for physicians and caregivers. This audience also includes all healthcare schools in that the films have been designed to be informative to all disciplines.
  • Who are the characters and experts in the film? Terrific front-line caregivers, subject matter experts, and leaders who are wonderful role models from healthcare, government, community, and quality organizations will tell their stories. U.S. Congressmen such as Representative Dana Rohrabacher, astronauts such as Dr. Jim Bagian, heroes like Captain Sully Sullenberger, an Assistant Secretary of Health of the current administration, and other government leaders leading multi-billion dollar programs will expand on the stories they told in the first two films with special attention to the workforce and risk reduction of harm to all. Interviews of leaders of the World Health Organization and former health ministers will compliment patients and leaders from Switzerland, France, the U.K. and even Africa will underscore the common challenges and even more important the common innovations that improve care regardless of country.
  • Role model leaders and patient safety champions will educate and inspire the viewers to create safe, patient-centered care through leadership, safe practices, and technology. As in the prior films they will include CEOs and leaders from the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Harvard Affiliated Hospitals, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Johns Hopkins Medical Center.
  • The extraordinary high performance and safety records of the Navy that operates in high risk environments will be addressed. The great leadership we see in the U.S. Navy exhibits the kind of extraordinary leadership healthcare needs as was communicated in the first two films of the series. The Blue Angels sequence from Surfing the Tsunami has had extraordinary resonance with healthcare leaders.

    When:
  • In light of multiple awards and response the prior two films have earned, TMIT intends to broadcast the film on a national television network after a nationwide publicity campaign to build viewership.
  • The prior films have been distributed by broadcast, DVD, and over the internet to 93 countries, and they have been adopted by those in healthcare education and continuing education in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and radiologic technology. They are being used in Research and Development activities by TMIT in its National Research Test Bed of more than half of U.S. hospitals. It is anticipated that this film will be used in the same manner once released.
  • After broadcast airings, the film will be aggressively promoted in 7 study zones by TMIT: Orange County and Bay Area/Silicon Valley; Central Texas; Rochester, Minnesota; Cleveland, Ohio; Jacksonville, Florida; and Boston, Massachusetts. Impact studies will be undertaken to drive the pre-production of the fourth and fifth films in the series.

    Why:
  • Most patient safety documentaries and stories delivered through mass media either provide a very depressing and sobering picture of U.S. healthcare, or highlight technological breakthroughs that are unavailable for front-line hospitals. This documentary is intended to be a call to action for everyone by providing real-world opportunities to improve today, rather than to wait until tomorrow. Consumer media stories driven by the economics of advertising are typically negative. Healing Moments will provide inspiring stories that offer a solution path for healthcare systems improvement. The mission of the documentary is to use terrific role models to inspire patients, caregivers, policy makers, and suppliers.
